IGDS: NBU considers activism to be integral to our mission of transforming gender relations in the Caribbean. The Institute supports initiatives which recognize that inclusive development must center concerns around gender equity to capitalize on the full potential of its citizens.
The Institute has worked with the Caribbean Women's Association, the National Organisation for Women, UN Women, the Caribbean Policy Development Centre, other departments at The UWI and various embassies to promote this mission.

Additionally, our partnership with the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination and the Caribbean Policy Development Centre, the Institute produced a short public service announcement to educate the university community and wider public about the importance of Sustainable Development Goal 5 on Gender Equality. Quotes

" To engender local government is an attempt to change the balance of political power at the community level to be more inclusive of women and gender issues. It tries to correct for earlier processes of citizenship that viewed women as politically irrelevant...Engendering local government therefore requires we use the conceptual tools of governance and power sharing to analyze women's experiences in local government."
Engendering Local Government in the Commonwealth Caribbean, Violet Eudine Barriteau
