Outreach: Activism

IGDS: NBU takes an active role in activism and outreach in Barbados. We consider activism to be integral to our mission to transform gender relations in the Caribbean in support of the University of the West Indies' mission to enhance regional and international development. We support initiatives that recognize that inclusive development must center concerns around gender equity to capitalize on its full potential.

Over the past years we worked with partners such as the Caribbean Women's Association, the National Organisation for Women, UN Women, Caribbean Policy Development Centre, other UWI departments and various embassies to promote this mission.

During 2016 IGDS: NBU is committed to promoted gender equity as a central component of sustainable development. In our partnership with the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination and the Caribbean Policy Development Centre, we have produced a short public service announcement to educate the university community and broader public about the importance of Sustainable Development Goal 5 on Gender Equality. This serves as a first step. You may view the video here.

" Homosexuality has always, and will always, pose a problem for hegemonic masculinity. Homosexuality represents one of the biggest challenges to masculinity because it refuses to conform to those dominant ideas about what is a man, how he should behave and whether there is only one way of understanding masculinity. The fact of the matter is that men do not stop being men because of the sex of the person with whom they sleep. "
