Dare to be Different Series

This is the first initiative to take place under the Faculty’s new Dare to be Different series. Initiatives within this series challenge participants to: Think Out-of-the-Box, Be Daring, Be Innovative, Try Something New.

Why start with Mathematics?

To reach the Region’s aspirations of the full integration of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in its economic and social development, all aspects of its STEM foundation must be strong. Mathematics forms a key pillar in the STEM foundation.  Without it, science and technology would not have advanced to its present form.

The Symposium

The primary aim of this symposium is to begin the process of revitalizing Mathematics in Barbados and the Region. Over the years, we have all heard stories of a decline in Mathematics performance. With the growing interest in and move towards a STEM-based economy, the time for intervention is now. It is rather simple, without strong Mathematics, all of our STEM initiatives will eventually fail or never reach their full potential.
At the end of this symposium we hope to generate a number of innovative, sustainable, actionable ideas, as well as the beginnings of a plan on how to implement those actions.
Note the two important words, innovative and sustainable. Innovative simply says, no need to rehash the same methodologies over and over again. If it doesn’t work, fix it. Sustainability is vital since many of these projects will run over a number of years before the full benefits are achieved.
