M.Sc. Financial and Business Economics
This degree is a designed for students interested in applying advanced economic techniques to real world problems encountered by businesses and financial markets.  Students are expected to have a strong undergraduate background in economics or a related quantitative discipline.  The programme will use a mixture of theoretical modelling and applied techniques and illustrate how theses tool can be employed to explain fundamental market behaviour.  Previous graduates from the programme have found employment in international financial institutions, central banks as well as international business and financial service companies. 

Objectives
The M.Sc. degree in Financial and Business Economics is designed to:

•   Enable students to develop analytical and practical skills in economics useful in financial
     institutions or to undertake a career in industry or businesses which require advanced analytical
     skills;

•   Provide an understanding of economic theory and its applications to finance and   business;
    economic theory and its applications to finance and business;

•   Position students not only to effectively compete internationally but also to understand the
    dynamics of globalization;

 •  Develop research skill in quantitative techniques necessary to undertake policy analysis and
    forecasting, particularly as applied to financial and business issues.

Entry Requirement and How to Apply
To be admitted to the program, a candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with at least Second Class Honours in Economics or related subject. Candidates should have completed ECON 3049 Econometrics I or its equivalent at the undergraduate level.

Students without this course who are accepted to the programme will be required to take it in the first semester. Candidates with insufficient economics background will be required to pass a qualifying examination in courses specified by the Department before final admission is made. Applicants will be selected on the basis of their capability to undertake the course of study leading to the award of the MSc degree.

Course of Study Students are required to gain 36 credits through successful completion of 6 compulsory and 2 approved elective courses (3 credits each), as well as a Research Paper (12 credits).

Duration of Programme The programme can be completed in 12 months for full-time and 24 months for part-time students. Classes run from September to August with the period of April to August devoted to the writing up of the Research Paper.
