A new academic year is upon us and with it comes a fresh season of growth, knowledge, experience, and new opportunity for self-advancement and self-actualization.  In the wider world it is a time of economic challenge, political change and a fervent search for appropriate intellectual tools to understand current reality.  All of this makes it an exciting time to be commencing or continuing a life as a student in the Department of Government, Sociology and Social Work within the Faculty of Social Sciences at UWI, Cave Hill.  The disciplines within the department have historically played a critical role in the Caribbean’s search for ideas and self-knowledge, and have made an indelible contribution to West Indian development.  It is therefore my distinct pleasure to welcome you, new and continuing students, to take your places within that glorious tradition.  I am confident that you will find a willing and able corps of academic and administrative guides who will assist you along your journey.  We stand ready to ensure that your experience here is rich and meaningful, and that you achieve the goals that you have set for yourself.
