About the Humanities Festival

Since its inception in 1994, the Humanities Festival, originally staged by the Faculty of Arts and General Studies at the Cave Hill Campus of UWI, has grown by leaps and bounds.

The Humanities Festival, originally "Humanities Week", was the brainchild of Hilary Beckles and Glyne Griffith. The Festival was intended to recognize outstanding Caribbean scholars who have contributed to the Arts. It was conceptualized to encourage members of the wider UWI fraternity to become involved in activities and symposia, and bridge the gap between popular interset and scholarly thought.

Lectures, panel discussions, dance and dramatic performances all form part of the vibrant melange that has become the Humanities Festival. The environment at Cave Hill becomes electrified as poets, authors, actors, dancers, scholars and purveyors of oral tradition pass one another in the halls between formal and informal gatherings.
