CAVE HILL PHILOSOPHY SYMPOSIUM 2011

CONVERSATIONS VII:
Social and Political Philosophy

The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Barbados

November 16-18, 2011

The broad theme for the seventh Cave Hill Philosophy Symposium (CHiPS) will be social and political philosophy. In keeping with the spirit of our conversations, we hope to bring together, for discussion on social and political matters, thinkers operating in and across different cultural and philosophical traditions as well as other disciplines that share a boundary with philosophy. We invite papers examining pertinent issues ranging from social and political ideals such as equality, justice, and liberty through political ideologies such as anarchism, Confucianism, conservatism, Marxism, and socialism, to issues related to the distinctive problems of studying human society. Also invited are papers on themes such as the nature of political authority, individual rights and responsibilities within society; racism, ethnicity, and gender discrimination; war and terrorism; crime and punishment; development and social progress; social agency, the relevance of Darwinian theory in the social sciences, etc. CHiPS encourages dialogue across philosophical traditions, and so particularly welcomes contributions that deal with or compare a variety of philosophical traditions or approaches.

Our keynote speaker will be Professor Charles W. Mills. He is John Evans Professor of Moral and Intellectual Philosophy, Northwestern University, USA. Author of the seminal The Racial Contract and three collections of papers, his work is in the general area of social and political philosophy, particularly in oppositional political theory centred on class, gender, and race. He will deliver a public lecture, entitled “Racial Justice”.

CHiPS VII will be held in the third week of November to coincide with UNESCO World Philosophy Day (this year November 17th). The Symposium will begin on Wednesday 16th and end on Friday 18th.

In an effort to ensure well-prepared, quality presentations, abstracts (300-500 words) are due by August 15, 2011. Participants whose abstracts are accepted by the vetting committee will then be required to submit their completed papers via email as an attachment in Open or LibreOffice, Word, or Wordperfect by the firm deadline of October 15, 2011. (These papers will then be posted on-line for other participants to consult prior to the conference with the intention that time at the Symposium can be devoted much more to discussion than to exposition of the written papers.) We hope that revised papers will continue to be available on-line: those from the earlier symposia can be accessed from http://www.cavehill.uwi.edu/fhe/histphil/Philosophy/ChiPS/.
