Paul Ernest is almost single-handedly the inventor of the Philosophy of Mathematics Education, a journal devoted to which he continues to edit. After working in computers Paul became teacher of mathematics at a London comprehensive school in 1976. He then worked as a lecturer in mathematics and mathematics teacher educator at Homerton College, Cambridge, and Bedford College of Higher Education. He was appointed as Lecturer in Education, University of the West Indies, Kingston, Jamaica, 1982, and then at University of Exeter in 1984, where he remained until his retirement.
Paul Ernest was awarded a Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowship, 1991-93 to develop a social constructivist theory of mathematics. He is the chair and founder of the International Philosophy of Mathematics Education Network since 1990, and general editor Philosophy of Mathematics Education Newsletter. He is also general editor of the Falmer press series Studies in Mathematics Education. He was elected a member of the committee of the International Study Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 1992-95, and joined the committee of the British Society for Research on the Learning of Mathematics in 1994. He has given a large number of invited papers and chaired symposia at international conferences and he has contributed chapters to books and papers to published conference proceedings, and over 100 papers to journals. His most recent book is Social Constructivism as a Philosophy of Mathematics, Albany, New York: SUNY Press, 1998.
