Requirements for the
BA History (Special)
2009/2010

You must complete at least eighteen (18) three-credit History courses for a total of 54 credits, distributed as follows:

Major Requirements

Four (4) courses which must include:
1. HIST1601(H16A) - Atlantic World 1400 - 1600
2. HIST1602(H16B) - Atlantic World 1600 - 1800
3. HIST1703(H17C) - Introduction to History
4. One (1) Level 1 History Course

Faculty Requirments:
5. FOUN1001 English for Academic Purposes**
6. Either FOUN1002 Language Argument OR
FOUN1003 Rhetoric I - The Writing Process
7-8. Two Faculty courses outside the History Major but offered within the Faculty (include the Foreign Language requirement if applicable***)

Electives:
9-10. Two (2) Level I Electives

Total: 10 courses (30 credits) at Level I

* Prerequisite: Grade 1 CXC English Language or equivalent; OR a pass in the English Proficiency Test. Students who do not have the prerequisite are required to pass the remedial course FOUN0100 Fundamentals of Written English before registering for the Language Foundation Courses.

** Please note that students who possess CAPE Communications at Grade I may be exempted from taking FOUN1001 English for Academic Purposes. However, you are advised that this is not for credit and you will be required to take another Level I course to make up the 10 courses.

*** The Foreign Language Requirement applies to students who do not have a CXC pass (Grades 1, 2 or 3 after 1998) in a foreign language, in which case they must register for one of the basic courses in Spanish or French or Portuguese.

Major Requirements:

1-7. Seven (7) History courses, of which three (3) must be:

HIST2003 - History of the West Indies I
HIST2004 - History of the West Indies II
HIST2900 Research Methods in History

Faculty Requirements:

8. FOUN1210 Science, Medicine and Technology in Society
9. FOUN1301 Law, Governance, Economy and Society in the Caribbean

Electives:
10. One (1) Level II/III elective

Major Requirements
1-7. Any seven (7) History courses of which four (4) must be solely Level III courses.

Faculty Requirements:
8-9. HUMN3099 Caribbean Studies Research Project (6 credits)

Electives:
10. One (1) Level III Course
