Foundation courses administered in-Faculty:

 Foundation Writing Course

FOUN 0100 Fundamentals of Written English
This course must be taken by students who have failed the English Language Proficiency test, or did not take the test but are not exempted.  It must be passed before registering for any of the Foundation Courses in English Language.

Foundation Courses administered Out-of-Faculty

The two Out-of-Faculty Foundation courses are done at Level II. These are:

  • FOUN 1210 Science, Technology and Medicine in the Twentieth Century.  This course is administered by the Faculty of  Science and Technology and should be done at Level II.
  • FOUN 1301 Law, Governance, Economy and Society
    This course is administered by the Faculty of Social Sciences and should be done at Level II.
     

Foundation Course Requirements

In addition to their major field of study, all students pursuing the BA, BFA and BEd degrees are required to do four (4) Foundation Courses by the time they graduate. Each Foundation Course is worth three (3) credits, for a total of twelve (12) credits altogether.

Although they are all coded as Level I courses, only the Foundation Courses in English Language must be taken at Level I. The out of Faculty Foundation courses i.e. FOUN 1210 and FOUN 1301, should be taken at Level II.

The level I Foundation Courses in English Language are administered by the Humanities and Education Faculty Office and the Department of Language, Linguistics and Literature while the Level I course FOUN 1101 Caribbean Civilisation is administered by the Department of History and Philosophy.

FOUN 1210 is administered by the Faculty of Science & Technology and by the School of Clinical Medicine & Research. FOUN 1301 is administered by the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Law. Please refer any enquiries to the relevant Faculty.
 

General Restrictions

The Foundation Course FOUN 1001 English for Academic Purposes is compulsory for all students entering the University. Students in the Faculty of Humanities and Education must also do one other Level I English Language Foundation Course (refer to your Programme structure).

It should be noted that students pursuing the BA, BEd or BFA degree will not be required to do FOUN 1101 Caribbean Civilisation.

All new students pursuing the BA, BEd or BFA must accordingly do the following Foundation Courses by the time they graduate:


 
At Level I 1. FOUN 1001  English for Academic Purposes 3 credit

2. FOUN 1002 Language Argument OR FOUN 1003  Rhetoric I - The Writing Process.  Psychology students do FOUN1008 Rhetoric II: Writing for Special Purposes.

At Level II

 
3. FOUN 1210 Science, Med & Technology in Society 3 credits
4. FOUN 1301 Law, Governance, Economy & Society 3 credits
