POUi: Current Issue of POUi - POUi XVIII , 2017

Welcome to POUi XVIII.

While going to press (as we used to say in the good old days) we were delighted to hear some wonderful news concerning three writers closely associated with POUi.
First, one of our consultant editors, Kamau Brathwaite, has just been honoured with a Pen America Lifetime and Career Achievement award.

The 2018 Pen/Voelcker Award for Poetry was conferred on Kamau for his "distinguished and growing body of work [which] represents a notable and accomplished presence in American literature."
Second, POUi XVIII contributor Anthony Kellman (see page 111 and 188) has won the 2018 Casa de la Américas Award in the Category of Anglophone Caribbean Literature, the first Barbadian of his generation to do so.

Kellman’s Tracing Jaja (Peepal Tree Press, 2016) was described by the jury as “a remarkable novel about human endurance, our capacity to find beauty and love even in the darkest of circumstances.”

Finally, Philip Nanton (long-standing POUi contributor and consultant editor) was given honorable mention by the Casa de la Américas jury for his “stunning collection of poems” Canouan Suite and Other Pieces (Papilotte Press, 2016).

Congrats to Kamau, Tony and Philip from all the POUi family.
