BA Literatures in English (Special)
2007/2008


Students, especially those who intend to teach and / or who wish to pursue postgraduate studies in the field, are encouraged to do a ‘Special’ in Literatures in English. To this end, students are required to pass a minimum of eighteen (18) courses (54 credits) in the field. These must be chosen according to the indications given below:

Level I

Major Requirements:

The following introductory courses are compulsory for all students entering the programme and are the minimum prerequisites for all subsequent courses:

1. LITS1001 - Introduction to Poetry
2. LITS1002 - Introduction to Prose Fiction
3. LITS1003 - Introduction to Drama
4. LITS1005 Writing About Literature (not compulsory, but highly recommended) OR Level I elective

Faculty Requirements:

Students must also complete the following to satisfy their Level I requirements:

5. *Foreign Language OR Level I Elective (outside Major, but within the Faculty) if Foreign Language is not required.
6. Level I Elective outside Major, but within the Faculty
7. ‡FOUN1001 English for Academic Purposes (Prerequisite requirement )
8. FOUN1002 OR FOUN1003 (Prerequisite requirement )
9-10. Two Level I Electives

*The Foreign Language Requirement applies only to students who do not have a CXC Grade 1, 2 or 3 (after 1998) in a foreign language or equivalent, in which case they must register for one of the basic courses in Spanish or French or Portuguese.

† Prerequisites: Pass in English Proficiency Test OR Exemption from Proficiency Test OR Pass in FOUN0100

‡ Please note that students who possess CAPE Communications at Grade I may be exempted from taking FOUN1001. However, you are advised that this is not for credit and you will be required to take another Level I course to make up the 10 courses.

Total credits to complete Level I : Thirty credits (10 courses)



Levels II / III

1-2. At least two (2) of the following prose fiction courses:

  • LITS2101 - Novel I: the Rise of the Novel
  • LITS2102 - Novel II: the Nineteenth Century Novel
  • LITS2117 - The American Novel: a Survey
  • LITS2118 - African-American Fiction
  • LITS3101 - Modern Prose Fiction
  • LITS3102 - Contemporary Prose Fiction

3-4. At least two (2) of the following poetry courses:

  • LITS2001 - Poetry I: Wyatt to Pope
  • LITS2002 - Poetry II: Romantics and Victorians
  • LITS2005 - Introduction to Chaucer
  • LITS2013 - Introduction to Milton
  • LITS3001 - Modern Poetry
  • LITS3003 - Contemporary Poetry

5-6. At least two (2) of the following drama courses:

  • LITS2203 - Shakespeare I: Histories and Comedies
  • LITS2204 - Shakespeare II: Tragedies and Romances
  • LITS2207 - Introduction to Shakespeare
  • LITS2209 - Renaissance Drama
  • LITS2499 - Drama and Theatre Arts (equivalent to two courses)

7-9. At least three (3) of the following courses in West Indian literature and culture:

  1. LITS2514 - West Indian Literary Classics I
  2. LITS2516 - West Indian Literary Classics II
  3. LITS3501 - Advanced Seminar in West Indian Literature
  4. LITS3502 - West Indian Literature: Special Author
  5. Seminar

10-11. At least two (2) of the following courses in African, diasporic and post-colonial literatures:

  • LITS3601 - African Literature I
  • LITS3602 - African Literature II
  • LITS3603 - African Film
  • HUMN2702 - Women Writers of Africa and the Caribbean
  • HUMN2801 - African Writing and its Oral Context

12-13. At least two (2) of the following critical theory courses:

  • LITS2306 - History of Criticism *
  • LITS2307 - Modern Literary Theory
  • LITS3301 - Issues in Criticism
  • LITS3303 - Modern Critical Theory
  • LITS3304 - Post-Structuralisms and Post-Colonialisms

*This course is the pre-requisite for all other Theory courses and should be done first, preferably upon entering Level II.

14-15. At least two (2) of the following courses:

  • Any courses listed above not already taken
  • LITS2603 - Creative Writing: Poetry
  • LITS2604 - Creative Writing: Prose Fiction
  • LITS2403 - Caribbean Popular Culture
  • LITS3405 - Caribbean Popular Culture II

At least three (3) of the courses chosen above must be at Level III.

Levels II and III Faculty Requirements:

16. FOUN1210 Science, Medicine and Technology in the 20th Century (Level II)
17. FOUN 1301 Law, Governance, Society and Economy (Level II)
18-19. HUMN3099 Caribbean Studies (or its substitutes) (Level III)
20. One Level II OR Level III Elective

Total to complete Levels II & III: Sixty credits (20 courses)


TOTAL CREDITS For Award of the BA Degree:

Special Requirements: 54 credits (18 courses)
Faculty Requirements: 24 credits (8 courses)
Electives: 12 credits (4 courses)
TOTAL: 30 credits (90 courses)
