Requirements for Major

(Applicable to students who entered prior to 2003-2004)

In order to major in Literatures in English, students are required to complete at least sixteen (16) 3 credit courses in the field, for a total of 48 credits, distributed as follows:

LEVEL I

The following Level I courses are compulsory for all students entering the programme and are the minimum prerequisites for all subsequent courses:

LITS1001 (E10A) - Introduction to Poetry
LITS1002 (E10B) - Introduction to Prose Fiction
LITS1003 (E10C) - Introduction to Drama

 

LEVEL II/III

At least two (2) of the following courses on British and American poetry:

LITS2001 (E20A) - Poetry I: Chaucer to Pope
LITS2002 (E20B) - Poetry II: Romantics and Victorians
LITS3001 (E30A) - Twentieth Century Poetry
LITS3003 (E30C) - Post-War British and American Poetry

At least two (2) of the following courses on British and American prose fiction:

LITS2101 (E21A) - Novel I: The Rise of the Novel
LITS1002 (E21B) - Novel II: The Nineteenth Century Novel
LITS2118 (E21R) - African-American Fiction
LITS2117 (E21Y) - American Novel

At least one (1) of the following courses on Shakespeare and Renaissance drama:

LITS2203 (E22C) - Shakespeare I: Histories and Comedies
LITS2204 (E22D) - Shakespeare II: Tragedies and Romances
LITS2209 (E22F) - Renaissance Drama
LITS2207 (E22G) - Shakespeare

At least one (1) the following courses on Twentieth century British and American Prose Fiction:

LITS3101 (E31A) - Early Modern Prose Fiction
LITS3102 (E31B) - Contemporary Prose Fiction

At least two (2) of the following courses on West Indian literature:

(E25A) - West Indian Literature I
(E25B) - West Indian Literature II: Women Writers
LITS3501 (E35A) - Advanced Seminar in West Indian Literature
LITS3502 (E35B) - West Indian Literature: Special Author Seminar

At least two (2) of the following courses on Cultural and Critical Theory:

LITS2306 (E23F) - History of Literary Criticism
LITS2307 (E23G) - Twentieth Century Literary Theory
LITS3304 (E33D) - Post-Structuralisms and Post - Colonialisms

At least three (3) of the following:

LITS2499 (E240)- Drama and Theatre Arts

TOTAL: 16 courses (48 credits)

N.B. E240 is a year-long course and thus, the equivalent of two (2) semester-long courses.
