Requirements for the Major
Literatures in English


2009/2010

In order to major in Literatures in English, all students are required to pass a minimum of twelve (12) courses (36 credits) in the field. These must be chosen according to the indications given below:

Level I

Major Requirements:

The following introductory courses are compulsory for all students entering the programme and are the minimum prerequisites for all subsequent courses:

1. LITS1001 - Introduction to Poetry
2. LITS1002 - Introduction to Prose Fiction
3. LITS1003 - Introduction to Drama
4. LITS1005 - Writing about Literature (not compulsory by highly recommended) OR One (1) Level I course

Faculty Requirements:

5. *Foreign Language OR Level I Elective (outside Major, but within the Faculty) if Foreign Language is not required.
6. Level I Elective outside Major, but within the Faculty
7. ‡FOUN1001 English for Academic Purposes (Prerequisite requirement )
8. FOUN1002 OR FOUN1003 (Prerequisite requirement )
9-10. Two (2) Level I electives

*The Foreign Language Requirement applies only to students who do not have a CXC Grade 1, 2 or 3 (after 1998) in a foreign language or equivalent, in which case they must register for one of the basic courses in Spanish or French or Portuguese.

† Prerequisites: Pass in English Proficiency Test OR Exemption from Proficiency Test OR Pass in FOUN0100

‡ Please note that students who possess CAPE Communications at Grade I may be exempted from taking FOUN1001. However, you are advised that this is not for credit and you will be required to take another Level I course to make up the 10 courses.

Total to complete Level I : Thirty credits (10 courses)


Level II / III
(At least three of the courses chosen from the following catergories must be at Level III)

1. LITS2901 Literary Research Methods

2-3. At least two (2) of the following Prose Fiction courses:

  • LITS2101 Novel I: the Rise of the Novel
  • LITS2102 Novel II: the Nineteenth Century Novel
  • LITS2117 The American Novel: a Survey
  • LITS2118 African-American Fiction
  • LITS3101 Modern Prose Fiction
  • LITS3102 Contemporary Prose Fiction

4-5.. At least two (2) of the following Poetry courses:

  • LITS2001 Poetry I: Wyatt to Pope
  • LITS2002 Poetry II: Romantics and Victorians
  • LITS2005 Introduction to Chaucer
  • LITS2013 Introduction to Milton
  • LITS3001 Modern Poetry
  • LITS3003 Contemporary Poetry

6. At least one (1) of the following Drama courses:

  • LITS2203 Shakespeare I: Histories and Comedies
  • LITS2204 Shakespeare II: Tragedies and Romances
  • LITS2207 Introduction to Shakespeare
  • LITS2209 Renaissance Drama
  • LITS2499 Drama and Theatre Arts (equivalent to 2 courses)

7-8. At least two (2) of the following courses in West Indian literature:

  • LITS2502 Caribbean Women Writers
  • LITS2514 West Indian Literary Classics I
  • LITS2516 West Indian Literary Classics II
  • LITS3501 Advanced Seminar in West Indian Literature
  • LITS3502 West Indian Literature: Special Author Seminar

9. At least one (1) of the following Critical Theory courses:

  • LITS2306 History of Criticism *
  • LITS2307 Modern Literary Theory
  • LITS3301 Issues in Criticism
  • LITS3303 Modern Critical Theory
  • LITS3304 Post-Structuralisms and Post-Colonialisms

* This course is the pre-requisite for all other Theory courses and should be done first, preferably upon entering Level II.

10. At least one (1) of the following courses or any course listed above not already taken:

  • LITS2403 Caribbean Popular Culture
  • LITS2603 Creative Writing: Poetry
  • LITS2604 Creative Writing: Prose Fiction
  • LITS3405 Caribbean Popular Culture II
  • LITS3601 African Literature I
  • LITS3602 African Literature II
  • LITS3603 African Film
  • HUMN2702 Women Writers of Africa and the Caribbean
  • HUMN2801 African Writing and its Oral Context

At least three (3) of the courses chosen above must be at Level III.

Levels II and III Faculty Requirements:

11. FOUN1210 Science, Medicine and Technology in the 20th Century (taken at Level II)
12. FOUN 1301 Law, Governance, Society and Economy (taken Level II)
13-14. HUMN3099 Caribbean Studies (or substitutes) (taken at Level III)
15-20. Six Level II/III Electives

NB: At least three of the courses chosen from the preceding catergories must be at Level III.

Total to complete Levels II & III: Sixty credits (20 courses)


TOTAL CREDITS For Award of the BA Degree:

Major Requirements: 36 credits (12 courses)
Faculty Requirements: 24 credits (8 courses)
Electives: 30 credits (10 courses)
TOTAL: 30 credits (90 courses)
