Foundation English Language Courses
In addition to their major field of study, all students pursuing the BA degree are required to do four (4) Foundation Courses by the time they graduate. Each Foundation Course is worth three (3) credits, for a total of twelve (12) credits altogether.
Although they are all coded as Level I courses, only the Foundation Courses in English Language must be taken at Level I. The others may be taken at Level II. They include:
Level I:
FOUN 1001/FD10A: English for Academic Purposes
FOUN 1002/FD10B: Language Argument
FOUN 1003/FD10C: Rhetoric I: The Writing Process
FOUN 1008/FD10H: Rhetoric II: Writing for Special Purposes

The level I Foundation Language courses FOUN 1001, FOUN 1002, FOUN 1003, FOUN 1008, are administered by the Department of Language, Linguistics and Literature while the Level I course FOUN 1101 Caribbean Civilization is administered by the Department of History and Philosophy. FOUN 1210 is administered by the Faculty of Science & Technology and by the School of Clinical Medicine & Research. FOUN 1301 is administered by the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Law. Please refer all enquiries to the relevant Faculty.
The Foundation Course in English Language FOUN 1001: English for Academic Purposes is compulsory for all students entering theUniversity. Students pursuing the BA must also do one other Level I English Language Foundation Course.
It should be noted, moreover, that students in a given Faculty (e.g. Pure and Applied Sciences) will not be allowed to take their Faculty’s own Foundation Course (e.g. FOUN 1210). Therefore, students pursuing the BA degree will not be required to do FOUN 1101 because it is offered within the Faculty of Humanities and Education.
