Undergraduate Courses in Spanish
The Faculty reserves the right to withdraw or to add courses as may be necessary or desirable, but except in cases of extreme emergency or difficulty no course will be added or withdrawn during an academic year. The Faculty does not guarantee that all courses listed in the following pages will be available this academic year. Time-tabling constraints may impose additional restrictions on the combinations of courses permissible. Students should consult the timetable and seek advice from the Faculty before finalising their registration. Students are not permitted to register for courses that clash on the timetable.
SPAN0101 (S01A) Beginners' Spanish I - Sem I: This course is designed for the student with little or no background in Spanish. It seeks to develop command of the essential elements of the Spanish grammar as well as basic communicative competence.
SPAN0102 (S01B) Beginners' Spanish II - Sem II: This course is designed for the student with some background in Spanish. It seeks to develop master of the more difficult elements of the Spanish grammar as well as greater communicative competence. To foster the development ofmore fluent speech various communicative activities will be employed.
SPAN0118 (S01R) Reading Course in Spanish: The main objective of this reading course is to provide the students with a reading proficiency in Spanish through the recognition and comprehension of the written language. This course will be made available to any student at the University who wishes to acquire a reading knowledge of the Spanish language.
SPAN1001 (S10A) Spanish Language IA - Sem I: This course will place emphasis on oral communication, listening and the written form which includes written comprehension and written creative expression. It also focuses on other skills such as translation and grammar. The course fosters the development of the student's linguistic competence in the use of Spanish Language.
SPAN1002 (S10B) Intermediate Spanish II - Sem II: This course is a continuation of Spanish 1101 objectives with greater emphasis on the expression of abstract and logical relations. The course seeks also to foster the mastery of the use of greater linguistic and socio-linguistic competence in the use of Spanish Language. Themes consisered will be drawn from contemporary Hispanic and particular Latin American life.
SPAN1203 (S12C) Literature in Spanish I - Sem I: Students will be introduced to the study of poetry and drama in Spanish through a series of lectures illustrated by poems and excerpts from plays.
SPAN1204 (S12D) Literature in Spanish II - Sem II: Students will be introduced to the study or narrative in Spanish through a series of introductory lectures illustrated by short stories and excerpts from novels.

SPAN2001 (S20A) Spanish Language IIA - Sem I: The aim of this course is to develop the student's command of written and oral Spanish through close reading of contemporary Spanish texts, oral and written precis, guided and free essays, listening comprehension and structural exercises, and conversation on relevant cultural themes and concepts.
SPAN2002 (S20D) Spanish Language IIB - Sem II: This course is intended to complete the grounding of students in written and spoken Spanish.
SPAN2101 (S21A) Spanish Language History I: This course reviews the development of Spanish phonology from the period of Vulgar Latin to the present.
SPAN2102 (S21B) Spanish Language History II: This course reviews the development of the Spanish morphosyntactic system from the period of Vulgar Latin to the present.
SPAN2214 (S22N) Hispanic Culture - Sem I: The aim of this course is to provide students with written and oral competence in Spanish appropriate to the second level through the use of teaching material that deals with selected Hispanic cultural themes.
SPAN2301 (S23A) 20th Century Spanish American Poetry - Sem I: The course will introduce students to representative poets of the Modernist and Vanguardist movements, as well as to the acknowledged leaders in the poetry of commitment.
SPAN2302 (S23B) 20th Century Spanish American Narrative - Sem II: The course will focus on various aspects of the twentieth century Spanish American novel. Students will be familiarized with those historical and literacy factors that provide a background to the evolution of its genre which will in turn allow students to take a closer look at the principal thematic concerns and literacy techniques manifested in the novels being studied.
SPAN2401 (S24A) Spanish Poetry: This course will survey the development of Spanish peninsular poetry from the Sixteenth century to the present.
SPAN2402 (S24B) Spanish Narrative - Sem I: This course will survey the history of Spanish peninsular narrative from Cervantes to the twentieth century.
SPAN2404 (S24D) Spanish Drama - Sem II: An overview of the development of drama in Spain from the Sixteenth century to the present, with an emphasis on the development of the comedia as a particular form of drama.
SPAN2414 (S24N) Latin American Film - Sem II: This course offers an overview of Latin American cinema designed to acquaint students with the various approaches to cinematic representation that have characterised films from the continent. In addition to broadening students' knowledgeof Latin America and honing their language skills, specific study of film technique will equip students with the capacity to criticise film intelligently and to distinguish the specific viewpoint of Latin American filmmakers. The films will be studied under the following major headings: History and Testimonial Cinema; Identify, Exile and Emigration; religion, Belief and Fantasy; Representation of Latin American Society; Views from North and South.
SPAN2702 (S27B Latin American Women Writers This course seeks to introduce students to the works of some of the contemporary women writers of the region.

SPAN3502/S30B International Business Spanish This course is designed to improve students' command and comprehension of written and oral Spanish while familiarizing them with the terminology and phraseology used in international business Spanish.
SPAN3503/S30N Spanish for Tourism This course aims to introduce students to the use of the Spanish language in the area of tourism.
SPAN3504/S31A Spanish Translation This course is designed to provide students with reading comprehension and written competence in Spanish appropriate to level III while equipping students with a knowledge of Spanish syntax, terminology and stylistics of a wide range of contemporary writing.
SPAN3506/S31B Introduction to Interpreting This course is designed to provide students with listening comprehension and oral competence.
SPAN3505/S31D Areas of Spanish Translation This course is designed to deepen students' grasp of translation practice through the coverage of specific areas of translation such as agriculture, Commerce, Economy and Society, the Environment, Information Science, and Tourism.
SPAN3302/S33B Cuban Revolution Literature This course examines the impact of the Cuban Revolution on literature in that society.
SPAN3601/S36A Afro-Hispanic Literature I This course focuses on the literary works of writers of African descent in Spanish America.
SPAN3602/S36B Afro-Hispanic Literature II This course is a continuation of SPAN1204/S36A.
SPAN3605/S36E Spanish Caribbean Poetry and Drama Substitute for UC/RP300: Caribbean Studies. This course will focus on the leading issues treated in the poetry and drama of the era, such as inter-racial relations, social and political protest, especially anti-imperialism and dictatorship.
SPAN3606/S36F Spanish Caribbean Narrative Substitute for UC/RP300: Caribbean Studies. Social and political issues are the main themes in this course, such as the matter of the search for identity in response to the imperialist presence and the struggle for independence in a colonial situation.
SPAN3702/S37B Spanish American Women's Narrative This course examines the contribution made by female writers to the corpus of Twentieth Century Spanish American fiction.
SPAN3707/S37G The Latin American Short Story This course introduces students to literary trends/movements as well as the social conditions which influence contemporary short story writing in Latin America.
