Requirements for the MAJOR in Spanish
(For New students entering from 2009/2010)

A minimum of 36 credits (12 courses) are required for a Major in Spanish, including 18 in language and 18 in literature.  The following 12 courses are mandatory:

LEVEL I

Major Requirements:

1. SPAN1001 - Spanish Language IA
2. SPAN1002 - Spanish Language IB
3. SPAN1214 - Introduction to Hispanic Culture
4. SPAN12__ -Introduction to Literature in Spanish

Level I Faculty Requirements & Electives:

Students must also complete the following to satisfy their Level I requirements:

5. Level I Elective (outside Spanish Major, but within the Faculty)
6. Level I Elective (outside Spanish Major, but within the Faculty)
7. ‡FOUN1001 English for Academic Purposes (†Prerequisite requirement )
8. Either FOUN1002 OR FOUN1003 (†Prerequisite requirement )
9-10. Two Level I Electives

† Prerequisites: Pass in English Proficiency Test OR Exemption from Proficiency Test OR Pass in FOUN0100

‡ Please note that students who possess CAPE Communications at Grade I may be exempted from taking FOUN1001. However, you are advised that this is not for credit and you will be required to take another Level I course to make up the 10 courses.

Total: 10 courses (30 credits) required at Level I

LEVEL II

Major Requirements:

1. SPAN2001 - Spanish Language IIA
2. SPAN2002 - Spanish Language IIB
3-4. Plus any two (2) Level II Spanish Literature courses.

Level II Faculty Requirements & Electives:

5. FOUN1210 - Science, Technology and Medicine in the Twentieth Century.
6. FOUN1301 - Law, Governance, Society and Economy in the Caribbean.
7-10. Four (4) Level II Electives.

Total: 10 courses (30 credits) at Level II

LEVEL III

1. SPAN3001 Spanish Language IIIA
2. SPAN3002 - Spanish Language IIIB
3. SPAN36__ - Spanish Caribbean Literature
4. One (1) of the following:

SPAN3502 International Business Spanish
SPAN3503 Spanish for Tourism
SPAN3504 Spanish Translation
SPAN3503 Areas of Spanish Translations
SPAN3507 The Latin American Short Story

Level III Faculty Requirements & Electives:

5-6. HUMN3099 Caribbean Studies (6 credits).
7-10. Four Level II/III electives

Students should note that SPAN 2214 (S22N) Hispanic Culture and SPAN 2414 (S24N) Latin American Film count as literature courses

 

TOTAL CREDITS For Award of the BA Degree (Spanish Major):

Major Requirements: 36 credits (12 courses)
Faculty Requirements: 24 credits (8 courses)
Electives: 30 credits (10 courses)
TOTAL: 30 credits (90 courses)
