Requirements for the MAJOR in Spanish

A minimum of 36 credits (12 courses) are required for a Major in Spanish, 18 in language and 18 in literature.  The following 12 courses are mandatory:

Major Requirements:

  1. SPAN1001 - Spanish Language IA (please read this important message)
  2. SPAN1002 - Spanish Language IB
  3. SPAN1203 - Literature in Spanish I
  4. SPAN1204 -Literature in Spanish II

    Level I Faculty Requirements & Electives:

    Students must also complete the following to satisfy their Level I requirements:

    5. Level I Elective (outside Spanish Major, but within the Faculty)
    6. Level I Elective (outside Spanish Major, but within the Faculty)
    7. ‡FOUN1001 English for Academic Purposes (Prerequisite requirement )
    8. FOUN1002 OR FOUN1003 (Prerequisite requirement )
    9-10. Two Level I Electives

† Prerequisites: Pass in English Proficiency Test OR Exemption from Proficiency Test OR Pass in FOUN0100

‡ Please note that students who possess CAPE Communications at Grade I may be exempted from taking FOUN1001. However, you are advised that this is not for credit and you will be required to take another Level I course to make up the 10 courses.

Total: 10 courses (30 credits) required at Level I


Major Requirements:

1. SPAN2001 (S20A) - Spanish Language IIA
2. SPAN2002 (S20D) - Spanish Language IIB
3-4. Plus any two (2) Level II Spanish Literature courses.

Level II Faculty Requirements & Electives:

5. FOUN1210 - Science, Technology and Medicine in the Twentieth Century.
6. FOUN1301 - Law, Governance, Society and Economy in the Caribbean.
7-10. Four (4) Level II/III Electives.

Total: 10 courses (30 credits) at Level II


1. SPAN3504(S31A) - Spanish Translation
2. Either SPAN3502(S30B) - Business Spanish OR
SPAN3503(S30N) - Spanish for Tourism
3-4. Plus any two (2) Level III Spanish Literature courses

Level III Faculty Requirements & Electives:

5-6. HUMN3099 Caribbean Studies (6 credits).
7-10. Four Level II/III electives


Students should note that SPAN 2214 (S22N) Hispanic Culture and SPAN 2414 (S24N) Latin American Film count as literature courses

NB: Students are cautioned that SPAN0101(S01A), SPAN0102(S01B) and SPAN0001 do not count towards the Major.

TOTAL CREDITS For Award of the BA Degree (Spanish Major):

Major Requirements: 36 credits (12 courses)
Faculty Requirements: 24 credits (8 courses)
Electives: 30 credits (10 courses)
TOTAL: 30 credits (90 courses)
