Requirements for the Major in French

2009/2010

A minimum of 36 credits are required for a Major in French, 18 in Language and 18 in Literature. Students must complete Level I language and literature courses before beginning any Level II or Level III courses. The following 12 courses (listed as Major requirements) are mandatory:

Major Requirements

1. FREN1401 (F10A) - French Language IA*
2. FREN1402 (F10B) - French Language IB*
3. FREN1303 (F13C) - Introduction to French Literature
4. FREN1304 (F13D) - Caribbean and African Literature in French

Level I Faculty Requirements & Electives:

Students must also complete the following to satisfy their Level I requirements:

5. Level I Elective (outside French Major, but within the Faculty)
6. Level I Elective (outside French Major, but within the Faculty
7. ‡FOUN1001 English for Academic Purposes (Prerequisite requirement )
8. FOUN1002 OR FOUN1003 (Prerequisite requirement )
9-10. Two Level I Electives

*The Foreign Language Requirement applies only to students who do not have a CXC Grade 1, 2 or 3 (after 1998) in a foreign language or equivalent, in which case they must register for one of the basic courses in Spanish or French or Portuguese.

† Prerequisites: Pass in English Proficiency Test OR Exemption from Proficiency Test OR Pass in FOUN0100

‡ Please note that students who possess CAPE Communications at Grade I may be exempted from taking FOUN1001. However, you are advised that this is not for credit and you will be required to take another Level I course to make up the 10 courses.

Total: 10 courses (30 credits) required at Level I


Level II

Major Requirements:

1. FREN2001 (F20A) - Advanced French I*
2. FREN2004 (F20D) - Advanced French II*
3-4. Plus any two Level II French Literature courses (including Francophone Culture).

Level II Faculty Requirements:

5. FOUN1210 - Science, Technology and Medicine in the Twentieth Century.
6. FOUN1301 - Law, Governance, Society and Economy in the Caribbean.
7-10. Four (4) Level II/III Electives.

Total: 10 courses (30 credits) at Level II


Level III

1. FREN3101 (F31A) - French Translation
2. Either FREN3003 (F30B) - International Business French* OR
FREN3014 (F30N) - French for Tourism*
3-4. Plus any two Level III French Literature courses.

Other Level III Faculty Requirements:

5-6. *HUMN3099 Caribbean Studies (6 credits).
7-10. Four Level II/III electives


NB: Students who are required to take the Beginners' courses should note that these courses can replace the two free electives/courses at Level I

Students should also note that for the purpose of fulfilling these requirements, FREN2214: Francophone Culture is considered a Literature course.

* Students must pass both written and oral components of the the language course in order to pass the course overall.


TOTAL CREDITS For Award of the BA Degree (French Major):

Major Requirements: 36 credits (12 courses)
Faculty Requirements: 24 credits (8 courses)
Electives: 30 credits (10 courses)
TOTAL: 30 credits (90 courses
