Welcome to 2005-2006 season of film. This semester promises to be very exciting with a full schedule of ten screenings instead of the usual seven. We have once again, included a Brazilian Focus which will take place during the month of October, and will feature films specially selected by the Brazilian Ambassador, His Excellency Orlando Galvêas Oliveira. The titles in this segment will be announced at a later date. The Film Society will also be collaborating with the Film Festival Committee on a fundraising screening on October 28. You will note that we have included two movies from our previous schedule which could not be screened at the time due to their unavailability – Kikujiro and L’aventure c’est l’aventure.
Beginning this season, there will be a minimal increase in membership fees as follows: annual membership $40.00 (non-student); $20 (student); per individual screening (temporary membership) - $6.00 (non-student); $3.00 (student).

Octobre (1994, 105 mins) Dir. Pierre Falardeau
Octobre, is based on a true story of the kidnap of Quebec cabinet minister Pierre Laporte in October 1970 by French-Canadian terrorists. It details the events of the kidnapping from the perspective of the abductors, the Front de Libération du Québec (FLQ), a terrorist organization operational in Canada during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The participants favored the separation of Quebec from the rest of the country, and were willing to use violence to press their claim.

Kikujiro (2000, 116 mins) Dir. Takeshi Kitano
Nine-year old Masao who lives with his grandmother has always wondered what his mother is like since she left him with her grandmother at a young age in order to work at her new faraway job. One day during the summer Masao grows bored since all of his friends have gone on vacation and decides to finally set out and to visit his mother. While on the beginning of his travels he meets up with a couple that are friends with his grandmother. The wife decides to send her husband, known only as Mister to the audience, to escort Masao safely to his mother. The two main characters end up hitchhiking the entire way to Masao's Mother's house and have encounters with various yet interesting characters and events.

Trois Coleurs: Bleu, Blanc, Rouge: is a trilogy of films by Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski. The trilogy deals with the ideals espoused by the French revolution of Liberty, Equalaity and Fraternity and how these relate to modern relationships.
Nov 4 - Bleu is the emotionally harrowing but ultimately uplifting tale of a woman Nov cutting out all feeling out of her life after her daughter and husband are killed in an accident.
Nov 11 - Blanc is a story of obsession and revenge. Down and out Polish immigrant Karol Karol is desperate to get out of France. He’s obsessed with his French soon to be ex-wife, his French bank account is frozen and he’s fed up with the inequality of it all.
Nov 18 - Rouge is a beautifully woven tale of chance encounters and relationships. Valentine, a young model, meets a former judge and together they explore the boundaries of their relationship and rekindle qualities in each other than had been forgotten or neglected.

Claude Lelouch Five French-Italian crooks find themselves becoming outdated in swinging 70s France so they update their tactics, specializing in kidnappings – including rock star Johnny Halliday, who has arranged his own abduction for the publicity. |
