The inaugural Diaspora Arts Festival seeks to start the process of building a new legacy of the African Diaspora by viewing its social issues, its journeys to freedom and its quests for affirmation through the eyes, bodies and music of some its most celebrated griots. They will tell their stories in song, music, dance, poetry and film. They will share their resolve, their ideas and their solutions in meeting contemporary challenges facing our society.
The EBCCI Walcott-Warner Theatre will be the venue for most of the performing arts and cinema events. Additional screenings will take place in the Kamau Brathwaite Cinemateque. An exhibition will be presented in the Art Gallery. The Toussaint L'Ouverture Promenade will be the location for a street festival and craft market. The festival will come to a climax with a jazz/blues and poetry extravaganza featuring one of the world's most celebrated harmonica players, Billy Branch and his quintet and Barbados' own international performance poet, AJA with his eight-piece band.
The Diaspora Arts Festival will add an exciting dimension to the festival calendar of Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean. While bringing world-class entertainment to the island, the festival will also broaden the cultural landscape for the local community and visitors. Without a doubt, the Diaspora Arts Festival will help cement Barbados' role as the leading arts destination in the English-speaking Caribbean.
