2 Ways of Healing: Dance Workshops for International Women's Day
The Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination will be celebrating International Women's Day with 2 Dance Workshopson Thursday March 9, 2017 in its Dance Studio, conducted by Dance lecturer Neri Torres and a former dance student, now Dance Therapist, Nicollette Williams.
Starting at 6p.m. Dancers and dancers for fitness can enjoy an evening of stress relieving dance choreography.
The evening opens at 6p.m. with Dance (Movement) Therapy is the therapeutic use of movement to further the emotional, cognitive, physical and social integration of the individual, based on the empirically supported premise that the body, mind and spirit are interconnected. Workshop leader Nicollette Williams is a graduate of the Pratt Institute, where she read for her Msc.in Creative Arts Therapy-Dance/Movement Therapy.
Dance lecturer, the award winning choreographer, Cuban American Neri Torres leads the workshop on Afro-Cuban Oricha Dances from 7:30p.m. Oricha dances are the root of many Cuban popular styles and originated in the Yoruba traditions of Nigeria. Orichas such as Yemaya, Eleggua, Ochun, Oya, etc. represent omnipresent and anthropomorphous forces of nature that rule on the universe. They are praised, greeted and begged to come down to earth to greet and grace their children – humans- through a confluence of song, rhythm and movement. The rich and complex dances that identify each one of them also become prayers within the context of this tradition
