Bachelor of Fine Arts, Creative Arts

Programme Structure

Level I | Level II | Level III

Level One: (10 courses - 30 credits)

Major Requirements:

1. The following course is required:

History, Theory and Criticism
HUMN 1001 - Critical Foundations in the Arts (3 credits)

2-3. In addition students must select one course from TWO of the following Creative Arts disciplines:

Dance
DANC 1301 - Introduction to Dance (3 credits)

Theatre
THEA 1000 - Introduction to Theatre (3 credits)

Moving Picture Arts
FILM 1000 - Introduction to Film (3 credits)

 

Faculty Requirements:

Students must also complete the following to satisfy their Level I requirements:

4. *Foreign Language OR Level I Elective (outside Major, but within the Faculty) if Foreign Language is not required.
5. Level I Elective outside Major, but within the Faculty
6. ‡FOUN1001 English for Academic Purposes (†Prerequisite requirement )
7. FOUN1002 OR FOUN1003 (†Prerequisite requirement )
8-10. Three Level I Electives from any faculty

*The Foreign Language Requirement applies only to students who do not have a CXC Grade 1, 2 or 3 (after 1998) in a foreign language or equivalent, in which case they must register for one of the basic courses in Spanish or French or Portuguese.
† Prerequisites: Pass in English Proficiency Test OR Exemption from Proficiency Test OR Pass in FOUN0100
‡ Please note that students who possess CAPE Communications at Grade I may be exempted from taking FOUN1001. However, you are advised that this is not for credit and you will be required to take another Level I course to make up the 10 courses.

Total: 10 courses (30 credits) required at Level I

Level Two:

Major Requirements:

Students MUST complete three credits in History, Theory and Criticism or History and Theory of Performing Arts

Students are to complete a minimum of eighteen (18) credits (6 courses) from other Level II courses in Creative Arts:

    DANC 2301 - Dance Technique (6 credits)
    DANC 2303 - Modern Dance (3 credits)
  • Theatre
    THEA 2210 Acting for Stage and Screen (6 credits)
    THEA 2203 - Production and Stagecraft (3 credits)
  • Moving Picture Arts
    FILM 2000 - Caribbean Film (3 credits)
    FILM 2110- Production Tools (3 credits)
    FILM 2115 Cinematography (3 credits)
    FILM 2103 - Documentary (3 credits)
    FILM 2104 - Production Management (3 credits)
  • Writing
    FILM 2801 - Fundamentals of Story and Narration (3 credits)
    FILM 2802 - Writing for Stage and Screen (3 credits)

Faculty Requirements

  • FOUN1210 Science, Medicine & Technology in Society
  • FOUN1301 Law, Governance, Economy & Society in the Caribbean
  • One (1) Level II elective from any faculty

Major Requirements:

Students MUST complete six (6) credits in Aesthetics, Theory & Criticism

Students are to complete a minimum of fifteen (15) credits (5 courses) from other Level III courses in Creative Arts.

    DANC 3301 - Choreography (3 credits)
    DANC 3302 - Dance Education (3 credits)
    DANC 3303 - Dance Ensemble (6 credits)
  • Theatre
    THEA 3202 - Directing Performance (3 credits)
    THEA 3210 - Theatre Ensemble (6 credits)
    THEA 3206 - Musical Theatre (3 credits)
  • Moving Picture Arts
    FILM 3105 - Directing (3 credits)
    FILM 3102 - Post-Production Editing and Sound (3 credits)
    FILM 3115 - Digital Media Workshop (6 credits)
  • Writing
    FILM 3801 - Playwriting (3 credits)
    HUMN 3900 - Internship (3 credits)
    HUMN 3901 - Capstone/Thesis Project (6 credits)

Faculty Requirements

  • HUMN3901 Capstone/Thesis Project for six (6) credits
  • One (1) Level 3 elective from any faculty
