Working group on “Governance feasibility of marine ecosystem-based management: a comparative analysis”, National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis
Collaboration continues in this international working group to compare the governance situation in the Caribbean to other places, with emphasis on trying to understand the institutions that are involved.

60th annual Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI) conference
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
MarGov researchers aim to present papers and posters on the project research topic at GCFI and share information regionally.

2007 National Conference of the Ocean Management Research Network (OMRN)
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
MarGov is partnering with an international project on Sustainable Aquatic Resources Management (SARM) with Dr. Brian Davy. Aspects of this project, and another on adaptive co-management which involves Mar Gov researchers, will be presented and discussed at this Canadian national conference.

Second Special Meeting of the Caribbean Fisheries Forum on the Common Fisheries Policy and Regime for the Caribbean Community
Georgetown, Guyana
MarGov continues to track progress with this important governance initiative as it nears the point of submission to the CARICOM Heads of Government for their consideration.

CRFM Regional Fisheries Stakeholder Workshop to Promote the Launching of a Caribbean Network of National Fisher Folk Organisations
Grand Anse, Grenada
MarGov has partnered with the CRFM to promote and assist the formation of a regional network comprising national fisherfolk organisations in the CRFM Member States.

Kemraj Parsram PhD Seminar on ‘Marine resource governance in the eastern Caribbean in the context of complex, adaptive social-ecological systems’

The first of three seminars required of doctoral students at the University of the West Indies. This one explained the research context and proposal to an academic and technical audience.

Introduction to network analysis in natural resource governance,
CANARI, Laventille, Trinidad and Tobago
CANARI, the first recipient of a MarGov small grant, and some partner organizations were introduce to network analysis in order to support the field research that is soon to commence.

9-10 August 2007
Sixth Meeting of the Ad Hoc Legal Working Group on the Common Fisheries Policy and Regime
Bridgetown, Barbados
MarGov participated in this meeting to follow and investigate the progress of this major regional initiative.

24 -26 July 2007
Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) Third Annual Scientific Meeting – Plenary Session, Kingstown , St. Vincent and the Grenadines
MarGov researchers will offer information on the project and network analysis methods, while getting the latest information on marine resource assessments.

11 - 13 July 2007
Partnership meeting of the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI)
Laventille, Trinidad and Tobago
CANARI partners will receive an update on MarGov and discuss collaboration with various regional projects, especially those involving the role of civil society in governance.

4 - 7 July 2007
MARE Conference …People and the Sea IV: 'Who Owns the Coast?'
Amsterdam , The Netherlands
MarGov researchers will be presenting a paper on the project research topic and seeking to network with other researchers and managers of marine resources worldwide.

25-27 June 2007
Working group on “Governance feasibility of marine ecosystem-based management: a comparative analysis”

MarGov researchers will be presenting information on the project along with the Caribbean Large Marine Ecosystem (CLME) Project and networking with international researchers on the relationships between governance and ecosystem-based management (EBM).

6-8 June 2007
2nd Steering Committee meeting of the CLME Cartagena, Columbia
Kemraj Parsram used this opportunity to share information and for informal discussions with the project partners present at the meeting. These included MarGov project overview and policy perspective documents as well as the Inception Workshop Report. Brief informal discussions were held with various partners and other interested parties on what fishery may be best suited for the focus of the PhD research.

MarGov Inception Workshop

The workshop sets the stage for 4 years of participatory research, capacity building, communications, small grants and other aspects of project implementation. The main aim of the inception workshop is to refine the research problem, questions and approaches to project implementation with key partners early in the project to ensure that the project is demand-driven.

4 - 5 May 2007
Second meeting of the Adaptive Co-Management (ACM) group
Brock University, St. Catharines, Ontario
This international research group will receive a presentation on MarGov and are expected to provide feedback, especially on the research question and methods concerning local level governance and adaptive co-management. The group will discuss a mechanism for exchanging information and building knowledge in this area of research.

Fifth Meeting of the Caribbean Fisheries Forum

Members of the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) are expected to receive a presentation on MarGov and to provide feedback on what aspects of marine resource governance in the eastern Caribbean could be of greatest interest to them.

Scientific Advisory Group of the FAO Western Central Atlantic Fisheries Commission (WECAFC)
Merida, Mexico
Members of the Scientific Advisory Group received a presentation on MarGov and provided feedback on what aspects of marine resource governance in the eastern Caribbean could be of greatest interest to WECAFC and FAO.

28 - 31 March 2007
2007 Annual Meeting of the Society for Applied Anthropology
Tampa, Florida
Patrick McConney attended a workshop on network analysis, met with social science colleagues researching marine resource governance and listened to their papers on current and emerging trends.
