NEXT THURSDAY, representatives of national fisheries authorities and observer organisations including the University of the West Indies, will gather in Suriname for the two-day Sixth Caribbean Fisheries Forum.

The Caribbean Fisheries Forum is the main advisory body of the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism. High on the agenda of this important multi-level CARICOM meeting is the draft agreement for the Common Fisheries Policy & Regime.

This overarching CARICOM agreement will pave the way for harmonised fisheries initiatives that address key issues of regional food security, free movement of fisher folk, good marine resource governance and poverty alleviation, while striking the right balance between conservation and development of the region's fisheries resources.

The fisheries sector is viewed as strategically important to CARICOM as it directly and indirectly employs more than 142 000 people. (PR)
