This semester, the first cohort of postgraduate Nursing students commenced studies at The UWI Cave Hill.

Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Dr Peter Adams, stated that 19 nurses are enrolled in the MSc in Nursing, with specialisations in Administration and Education. He disclosed the figure during remarks at a 70th anniversary lecture delivered by Sir George Alleyne on the theme: The Perception and Place of Health in Caribbean Integration. It was held in the Henry Fraser Lecture Theatre on Wednesday, September 5, 2018.

Adams noted that it was one of several ways that the faculty was seeking to expand its degree offerings.

“Work is in progress to have a MBBS programme articulated with the University of Ghana, another indigenous University founded like ours in 1948 as an external College of the University of London,” he added.

“The goal is to accept students from West Africa who will return to Ghana to complete their clinical training, while not having an impact on the resources of the QEH.”

Medical sciences also offers ten doctor of medicine programmes, as well as postgraduate programmes in areas such as public health, epidemiology, immunology and pharmacology.

In addition, Adams touted the significant ongoing research being conducted by the faculty in association with the George Alleyne Chronic Disease Research Centre. The dean made reference of the Eastern Caribbean Health Outcomes Network, which will soon be undertaking a diabetes prevention study.

“[The study] is designed to show how workshops to be conducted in our Polyclinics addressing lifestyle, and the possible use of metformin, can prevent the onset of diabetes in people with pre-diabetes,” Adams explained.
